Carter Kennedy St. Clair is twenty-three years old and came into this world on March 12. He is a former professional gymnast and is otherwise unemployed.
Carter stands at 6’ 4” tall and is lean and muscular, though in a defined manner, rather than having bulging biceps and the like. He has a small scar on his elbow, one at the base of his neck, and one on his wrist. The scars on his neck and elbow are from falling the wrong way off of a gymnastics apparatus. The scar on his wrist is from when he was eighteen and suffered a stress fracture that required surgery. He has since covered the scar with a tattoo of half of a tree at the urging of his younger sister, Chapin. Carter’s style is pretty casual and simple. He typically sticks to casual button up shirts, flannels, half-zip sweaters/sweatshirts, and v-neck tees with straight leg jeans. However, on the occasion that he makes his way into the gym, it’s not uncommon to see him in basketball shorts and a white tank top. He typically likes to look casually put together and artfully disheveled, though he does not put a lot of effort into his appearance.
PERSONALITY
RESERVED; Carter had always been a relatively shy kid, but the tragedy of his sister’s death has only driven him further into his own mind. He tends to avoid speaking his mind, and lets few people see who he really is. Part of this comes from his need to focus to maintain a normal conversation, and the other part comes from his desire to keep his grief to himself to avoid bringing others down.
GUILTY; Carter harbors a lot of guilt over Chapin’s death. This is reflected in how he interacts with others as well. He apologizes for even the smallest of errors or breaches of manners. He apologizes to inanimate objects if he runs into them while daydreaming. His apologies are always sincere, though some people use him as a doormat since they know that Carter will always take the fault or blame in an argument.
CONFUSED; Carter’s world is different than that of the ordinary person. While most days he is able to separate reality from delusion, he suffers from Fregoli delusions as a result of his sister’s death. Simply put, there are times when he will be having a conversation with someone, and instead of seeing that person, he will see Chapin and hear her voice. Typically, this only happens when someone is showing him extreme kindness and compassion, as he associates Chapin with all that is good in the world. He flickers in and out of delusions and reality, and may at times seem disoriented or disinterested as he deals with the aftermath of the delusions.
IMAGINATIVE; Carter has always been interested in the arts, and feels most at home expressing himself through poetry. He’s experimented with writing music from time to time, but lacks the confidence and self-assurance to perform publicly. From time to time though he can be seen strumming a guitar and singing in a soft baritone, though he prefers that others wouldn’t listen in.
HARDWORKING; Carter has grown up with an incredible work ethic. His world was gymnastics from age 12 through age 20. He was homeschooled to make travelling for gymnastics easier, and has always been independent in his studies and diligent in his workouts. If Carter sets a goal for himself, he will do anything in his power to reach it. He likes to stay busy, and prefers not having time to himself to marinate in his thoughts.
HUMBLE; Carter is quietly proud of his accomplishment, but he is never boastful. He will never brag about his past in gymnastics; he’s not a show off. He still has much of his gymnastics talent, but gets very easily embarrassed when people make a fuss over him. He’s not comfortable in the spotlight. He will quietly be thankful and accept a compliment, but avoids making a big show of himself. On that note, he knows he is attractive, but is rather uncomfortable flirting with both sexes.
SPONTANEOUS; On his better days, Carter is incredibly spontaneous. He might decide to go for a hike, hit the gym, go swimming, try a new kind of food, no adventure is too extreme. Provided that his schedule is free and clear, if someone has a plan, he’s likely willing to tag along. He may not be the life of the party, but he enjoys new experiences and getting outside his comfort zone, especially if it means being out in the fresh air.
COMPASSIONATE; Carter genuinely cares about the problems of others, no matter how small or trivial they may seem. He is always ready to lend a sympathetic ear to anyone who needs it. He gives wonderful advice and has great insight into the relationships of others, whenever he is called upon to offer it. If someone just needs a shoulder to cry on, Carter will be there. For someone he truly calls a friend, there is little he would not do for that person. Fiercely loyal and devoted, Carter is a good person to have by your side.
SERIOUS; Carter’s not the life of the party; he’s not the guy making everyone burst out laughing (most of the time). He prefers to talk about more serious subjects, and tends to be more philosophical. When he really gets talking to someone about some deep subject matter, that is when he feels most connected to humanity. Thus, he unfortunately feels uncomfortable in a lot of typical collegiate social interaction. There are a few rare exceptions though. Carter usually smokes marijuana to aid his creative endeavors and to self-medicate himself for his grief, but in the right setting, with the right people, he will just turn downright giddy and laugh until he can no longer breathe.
HISTORY
Carter was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. He is the oldest son of Mark and Jennifer St. Clair. He grew up with a younger sister, named Chapin. Chapin and Carter were born only 13 months apart, and were very close growing up. Chapin got involved in gymnastics around the age of 4, while Carter did not even set foot in a gym until age 10. Carter discovered his love for gymnastics at age 12, and he began training seriously that point, while Chapin had been competing on the elite circuit from the age of 11. The two spent most of their time together, as both were homeschooled to accommodate a rigorous competition schedule.
Shortly after his 18th birthday, Carter suffered a stress fracture to his wrist in a competition. The resulting surgery kept him out of gymnastics for about 8 months, and he never made a full recovery on the competition circuit. He hated the scar as it served as a constant reminder of his “failure.” As soon as Chapin turned 18, she convinced him that he should get a tattoo to cover it. Carter was willing to go along with anything to please his baby sister. Chapin suggested each of them getting half of a tree on their inner wrists, so that when placed next to one another they would make a whole. The tree was a symbol of strength.
Carter started college at age 19. He was a member of the school’s gymnastics team, and the second semester of his freshman year he decided to rush Lambda Sigma Rho and received a bid. He loved college, but hated being away from his sister, especially since he didn’t make it home often. His sophomore year, tragedy struck while he was travelling with the gymnastics team to a meet in Colorado. Chapin was also competing, though in a different part of the state. Carter got word that she had collapsed at a meet and would be taken to the hospital. After persuading one of the team’s graduate assistants to get him a rental car, he took off for the hospital that Chapin had been taken to. En route to the hospital, Carter was driving recklessly and crashed into another car. His life was saved by the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt and that his airbag deployed properly. He woke up in the same hospital Chapin had been taken to, only to learn that she had passed away. She had turned to starving herself and the damage to her heart had been so great that it caused her to collapse. Carter blames himself for not being there to look after her and protect her, for not seeing the symptoms.
Carter took a year off of school to deal with the aftermath of his sister’s death as well as the resulting damage to his brain from the car accident. Even after a year of grief counseling, Carter still had not returned to normal. He attempted to compete with the gymnastics team, but ultimately lost interest and quit. He did stick with his fraternity, enjoying the close bond of brotherhood that they shared helped soften the blow of losing his sister. He started using marijuana during his junior year to help with the bouts of grief and depression he would go through, as well as to enhance his creativity. As a senior, he is still involved with the fraternity, though he does not hold any leadership roles. He still struggles with delusions as a result of the car accident and Chapin’s death. He has not spoken to any doctor’s about them, and won’t any time soon. He has his own ways of making things work, and secretly he doesn’t want to forget Chapin any time soon, even if it means making himself miserable.
hey, so i'm TALLIE. i've been roleplaying for SEVEN YEARS now. as well as this character, i also play AVERY MADDOX. you can reach me by pm is fine or aim:xitsjustatangox if you need me for anything. i found HAZED AND CONFUSED by / on / from jack and spence and i'm pretty glad i did. here's an example of mah skillz. (:Cheyenne was cursing herself for being stupid enough to take part in “Wino Wednesdays” at the Alpha Beta Phi house Wednesday night. She knew she had two chapters of accounting to read, a balance sheet to fill in, as well as a slew of problems for finance that were due Friday first thing in the morning. She didn’t even like wine all the much anyway, but like any kind of alcohol, Cheyenne was unable to monitor how much she was drinking and how drunk she was getting, so of course she’d wound up with a killer wine hangover Thursday morning. Immediately upon waking, she remembered why she hated drinking wine. Too much sugar meant she felt like complete and utter shit the next morning. As much as she wanted to roll over in her bed at the house and go back to sleep, she popped the three aspirin she’d left on her nightstand and swallowed them down with the bottle of water she kept there for the sole purpose of taking pills (usually aspirin to soothe her hangover, or, on more proactive nights, one of those Chaser-Plus pills to attempt to avoid one).
Slowly, she sat up in bed, rubbed her eyes and snatched her Lilly Pulitzer planner from her bedside table drawer. She smacked herself in the forehead when she saw everything she had due the following day in class, and immediately regretted that gesture of frustration as it only caused her headache to throb even more. She sighed and rubbed her temples. Why was she so stupid?! Thursday nights were her favorite at the bars, and she was not going to be deprived of that to stay in and complete her homework. She’d already missed her one class of the day, so she figured she’d best go somewhere to study, especially because she had study hours due on Friday, and she hadn’t exactly done them yet.
Oh, but the hangover was terrible. Cheyenne knew she should get dressed and go to the library, but she just couldn’t bring herself to. Wracking her brain for places on campus to study, she devised the solution that she would go to Quigley’s. That way, she could study, and get a little hair of the dog back into her system to make her feel better. She would not get buzzed, or anywhere close to drunk as there was no way she could do accounting and finance under the influence of anything but Adderall, and she’d run out of that the week before. She made a mental note to hit up some fraternity this weekend and snoop around the brother’s rooms to find more. The stuff was expensive, and she couldn’t exactly afford it, so she resorting to stealing when she was out drinking. She could be pretty sneaky when she wanted to, and it definitely wasn’t out of the ordinary. Sorority girls were always stealing things from the brothers, they may not have liked it, but there certainly wasn’t much they could do about it.
Once she’d made it to Quigley’s, she glanced around the bar for an empty table. Finding none, she searched for people she knew that she might share a table with. Again, no one. She sighed and glanced at the bar, and that’s when she saw Wynne. There were several seats at the bar. Still, she didn’t want to be seen by Wynne. Not only was he one of the few people she was embarrassed to have slept with at the school, but on top of that, no matter how hard she tried to avoid it, she always ended up texting or IMing him when she was drunk, begging for more. Could this day seriously get any worse? She sighed. If her choices were Wynne, a drink, and her studies versus the library, a raging hangover, and her studies, she figured that Wynne had to be the lesser of two evils. Maybe he wouldn’t even notice her. She angled her body and face away from him as she took a seat two seats down from him at the bar, letting her long brown hair fall to cover her face as she unpacked her books and spread them out in front of her. When Quigley had toddled over to her, she kept her face down and her voice low,”Gin and tonic, please.”
